Physical Education at RBA
PE and school sport play a pivotal role within the school. PE is used as a vehicle to drive our motto of Community, Opportunity and Excellence, in turn helping to create the positive attitude to learning and success that is evident throughout the school. Whether it be competing in National competitions, friendly E team fixtures or general lessons, the pupils do so with intense pride, determination, enjoyment and a willingness to learn. The school gained Platinum Mark (with Distinction one of only 100 in the country) Status – a national award that recognises excellence of provision for all kinds of sports opportunities.
This positive approach is then taken back into the classroom and is a real driver for increased school attendance.
The overall aim of the Physical Education programme is to ensure that all children:
- Improve their personal performance
- Find enjoyment and lasting satisfaction through participating in a variety of sporting challenges.
- Take part in as much sport and PE as possible
In order to achieve this, we encourage pupils to take part in as much curricular and extra-curricular activities as possible.
Lessons involve pupils developing their knowledge of skills, performance, understanding, analysing and evaluating. Great emphasis is on actual performance aspect, so that each child is able to fully develop his/her physical competence. Pupils will experience a broad and balanced PE programme requiring a variety of skills and techniques, presented at a level appropriate to the learner.
PE should involve pupils in a continuous process of planning, performing and evaluating. The greatest emphasis will be placed on the actual performance aspect, so that each child is able to fully develop his/her physical competence.
Throughout all activities pupils will be encouraged to demonstrate and develop the personal qualities of commitment co-operation and fairness. These three qualities are very important to all PE lessons, whether pupils are practising together, playing games or competing.
The school is proud of both the standards in lessons and the mass participation in enrichment activities. The school runs a number of teams, clubs and activities, as well as a host of dance and performance clubs. We have an astounding reputation for sporting excellence within the region. There are extra-curricular activities at lunchtime, after school and on occasion at week-ends; these are offered all year round. This has led to our outstanding reputation for sporting excellence both nationally and within the eastern region.
We also have excellent relationships with a variety of clubs outside of school, such as netball, rugby, football and gymnastics. Having these links, allows us to ensure that our pupils can continue to develop their skills and confidence. Further to this it allows the coaches to come into school to identify new talent for their clubs.
All pupils have the chance to represent school in sports (A-G TEAM - football, rugby, netball, hockey, basketball, rounders, swimming, cricket, and athletics). Teams compete at Partnership, County, Regional and National level. Our cross-country, athletics, gymnastics and rugby teams regularly qualify for National Finals.
We work closely with our SSCO and the Redborne Sports Partnership to offer pupils various opportunities. These are sometimes delivered through our Sportability Clubs aimed as Inclusion for all, e.g. Boccia, Kurling, Goalball. We also offer activities such as bikeability and trips to see sporting events. The aim is to improve their confidence to help with their school work. We also train Sports Leaders to support and lead sports festivals for our lower schools, developing self-confidence, leadership skills, self-esteem and enjoyment of pupils within the partnership.
The school has excellent facilities for sport, including a large sports hall, a floodlit Astroturf, extensive playing fields and a gymnasium. We field teams for inter-school games in cricket, rounders, newly laid netball courts with SAQ markings, hockey, football, rugby, basketball, cross-country running and athletics.
