Travel to School Initiatives
Walking
We encourage our local students to walk to school, to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our doors open from 8am for breakfast club. This must be pre-booked through the MCAS App. The gates to the school playground open at 8.30am.
Bike/Scooter
We provide stands for bikes and scooters, but pupils must provide their own locks. Helmets and lights must be provided by families. Safety is paramount.
Car
Please note that there are no car parking facilities for parents at the school. Please be mindful about where you leave your car. Our neighbours in Kingfisher Road, George Street and Bloomfield Drive still need to use their driveways.
Please do not park on the Yellow lines outside of school or in the bus lane.
We encourage both car sharing and park and stride where possible. There are plenty of places to stop in Shefford that are a bit further away from the school. This helps to ease congestion around the school and encourages your child to walk a short distance, promoting physical activity for better health and well-being.
Travel to school initiatives
Walking, cycling and scooting is the only truly sustainable way of getting around. As we are becoming a car-dominated society, and we are increasingly struggling with the daily problems of air pollution and congestion and growing carbon emissions.
Benefits of walking, cycling and scooting:
- Healthier for children and parents
- Children are generally more alert and aware when they arrive at school
- Less stressful than driving
- Reduces traffic congestion and pollution
- Better air quality – as traffic fumes can contribute to asthma attacks
- It provides quality time for parents and children before school
- Fresh air makes children engage with their environment and local community
- It is an opportunity to teach and develop children's road safety skills
There are many health benefits to exercising:
- Exercise helps develop strong bones and increase muscle strength. It also tones the whole body.
- Exercise gets the heart pumping, which can help improve cognitive function for lessons throughout the school day.
- Exercise helps to improve your mood. Getting outdoors and making the most of natural daylight makes for a positive start to the day.
- When walking to school, children can relax and let off steam before they head into the classroom to learn.
- Walking, cycling or scooting to school can help children to feel more independent, confident and in control of themselves too. They'll learn the route from home to school, which can boost their navigation and road safety skills.
- We have plenty of scooter and cycle parking on site.
