Sustainability at RBA

Sustainability

As a school we are committed to empowering pupils to be advocates of change for a more sustainable world. Students are provided with opportunities to make positive environmental decisions and are educated in climate change and sustainability.

In accordance with the Department of Education’s policy, we have teamed up with Let’s Go Zero and created a school specific Climate Action Plan (CAP) inline with the four key areas, consisting of;  decarbonisation, biodiversity, adaptation and resilience and climate education. This is a working document and is regularly updated throughout the school year. We also have a designated Sustainability Lead and an Eco-council.

The Environment is also a focus in the school Behaviour Curriculum meaning each term the students are reminded on behaviours to ensure they maintain the environment both inside and outside the classroom.

Opportunities

Students are given the opportunity to apply to be on the school eco-council where they work together to develop school initiatives and raise awareness about environmental issues among students and staff. They are also invited to a variety of environmental related trips, including a sustainability conference held at the University of Bedford.

Across the school, students are visited by guest speakers from various sustainable backgrounds and take part in a variety of eco activities across the school calendar, recognising Earth Day,  tree planting, outdoor learning opportunities and litter picks.

Students have access to the well-being garden and sensory garden, which are used for gardening club and by the pastoral team to help with behaviour management. Students have built bug hotels, grown vegetables and help to maintain the spaces.

Students who demonstrate positive behaviours toward the environment are awarded with a specific environment Voice Point and can also be nominated for an award at the end of the year.

Achievements

Over the past three years, the students have worked hard to earn the school the Eco-Schools Green Flag award which recognises our commitment to environmental education, waste reduction, and energy efficiency. As well as being awarded the Anglian Water Eco Advocates Award 2025 for demonstrating and promoting eco-friendly practices in and out of school
