Modern Foreign Languages

All pupils learn French throughout their time at Robert Bloomfield. In years 5, 6 & 7 they have one hour per week and in year 8 this increases to 2 hours per week, plus an hour of their options language in y7 & 8.


In Year 5, pupils learn to introduce themselves and ask and give personal details e.g. name, age etc. They learn numbers up to 30, the French alphabet, descriptions of people, the months and the seasons, building on work already covered in Lower School. The emphasis is on speaking and listening, but reading and writing are important too.

In year 6, pupils learn to talk about school, hobbies, tell the time in French, and to give opinions and reasons. Although the emphasis is still on speaking and listening, pupils start to write independently.

In Year 7, topics include: family and friends, describing where you live, weather, free time, clothes, and going out. Communication in the classroom continues to develop, and grammar is explored more deeply, including the introduction of the past tense.

In year 8, topics include: food and drink, shopping, talking about everyday activities, pocket money, travel, and past holidays. The emphasis is on extending vocabulary and using two or more tenses.


In year 7, most pupils will be able to start a second language, choosing from: Spanish, German, and Latin. Pupils then continue with this language in year 8, alongside their French.

German: In Year 7, pupils cover topics such as introducing yourself, taking about your family, pets, and food and drink. In Year 8, we build on what was learnt the previous year, with increased emphasis on grammar. Topics include house and home, as well as regions where people live.

Spanish: In year 7, we cover topics such as introducing yourself, numbers, months, Spanish speaking countries, the alphabet, school equipment, classroom vocabulary, school subjects, and days of the week. In year 8 we learn how to describe people, talk about where we live, express opinions and give reasons, and describe daily routines.

Latin: In our Latin studies we are following closely the "Cambridge Latin Course". It concentrates on vocabulary acquisition and the translating of predominantly Latin into English, though of course grammar too is taught. It is based on the life of real Roman Patriarch Caecilius Iucundus who lived in Pompeii at the time of the eruption in AD79. Most of the materials are freely accessible on line if students wish to study independently!
