Physical Education at RBA

PE and school sport play a pivotal role within the school. PE is used as a vehicle to drive our motto of Community, Opportunity and Excellence, in turn helping to create the positive attitude to learning and success that is evident throughout the school. Whether it be competing in National competitions, friendly E team fixtures or general lessons, the pupils do so with intense pride, determination, enjoyment and a willingness to learn. The school gained Platinum Mark (with Distinction one of only 100 in the country) Status – a national award that recognises excellence of provision for all kinds of sports opportunities.

Our PE department are passionate about the wider benefits that physical activity offers. We therefore aim to provide pupils with both a sense of achievement and enjoyment from meaningful and positive PE experiences, as we feel this will ultimately result in greater physical literacy for them in their wider lives. We have therefore remodelled our PE curriculum for all year groups.

Our PE Curriculum intent explains our motto ‘PE for ALL’.

A- Achieve it- Achievement for everyone through concept-based learning.

L- Love it- Foster a genuine love for physical activity through a range of inclusive opportunities.

L- Live it- Develop lifelong physical literacy beyond RBA.

We strive to deliver a curriculum that hits 5 ambitious outcomes of high-quality physical education for every child:

1. Lead a healthy and active life;

2. Approach competition with confidence;

3. Perform in a broad range of physical activities;

4. Resilient to challenges in physical activity, sport and wider life;

5. Seek enjoyment and fulfilment through movement.

Curriculum

Our new 'PE Concept Curriculum' focuses learning experiences for all PE lessons around life concepts, such as resilience, communication, team work and confidence. These life concepts are natural PE outcomes and by placing more focus and emphasis on these, pupils will be able to recognise the importance of these concepts and make meaningful connections to their wider life. By achieving this, it will further enrich pupils’ personal development skills and their physical literacy for life. These concepts will be taught through a broad range of sports and physical activities, where pupils will still develop their motor skills and understanding of tactics and rules but progress will be measured in a holistic way. Each lesson will work towards three learning objectives; know, show and grow- facilitating pupil's cognitive understanding of sporting and life concepts, their motor skill development and their understanding of how to apply concepts into wider life settings.

We fully believe that our concept curriculum in PE will result in meaningful experiences in PE and higher outcomes for all pupils.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

The school is proud of both the standards in lessons and the mass participation in enrichment activities. The school runs a number of teams, clubs and activities, as well as a host of dance and performance clubs. We have an astounding reputation for sporting excellence within the region. There are extra-curricular activities at lunchtime, after school and on occasion at week-ends; these are offered all year round. This has led to our outstanding reputation for sporting excellence both nationally and within the eastern region.

We also have excellent relationships with a variety of clubs outside of school, such as netball, rugby, football and gymnastics. Having these links, allows us to ensure that our pupils can continue to develop their skills and confidence. Further to this it allows the coaches to come into school to identify new talent for their clubs.

Extra-Curricular Fixtures

All pupils have the chance to represent school in sports (A-G TEAM - football, rugby, netball, hockey, basketball, rounders, swimming, cricket, and athletics). Teams compete at Partnership, County, Regional and National level. Our cross-country, athletics, gymnastics and rugby teams regularly qualify for National Finals.

We work closely with our SSCO and the Redborne Sports Partnership to offer pupils various opportunities. These are sometimes delivered through our Sportability Clubs aimed as Inclusion for all, e.g. Boccia, Kurling, Goalball. We also offer activities such as bikeability and trips to see sporting events. The aim is to improve their confidence to help with their school work. We also train Sports Leaders to support and lead sports festivals for our lower schools, developing self-confidence, leadership skills, self-esteem and enjoyment of pupils within the partnership.

Facilities
The school has excellent facilities for sport, including a large sports hall, a floodlit Astroturf, extensive playing fields and a gymnasium. We field teams for inter-school games in cricket, rounders, newly laid netball courts with SAQ markings, hockey, football, rugby, basketball, cross-country running and athletics.
