PSHE

Personal, social, health and citizenship education deals with many real-life issues young people face as they grow up. It gives them the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy and responsible lives as confident individuals and members of society.

In all years, each class receives two hours of PSHE over a two-week cycle. Over the course of four years, there will be a progression within each unit of work in order to build and enhance the previous year's work.

Each term's lessons are grouped into units of work, which cover the following areas:

  • perceiving themselves as growing and changing individuals with their own experiences and ideas, and as members of communities
  • staying healthy and safe, managing risk
  • the wider world and the interdependence of communities within it
  • social justice and moral responsibility
  • how their own choices and behaviour can affect local, national or global issues and political and social institutions
  • how to make more confident and informed choices about their health, behaviour and environment
  • taking more responsibility, individually and as a group, for their own learning
  • defining and resisting bullying.

PSHE is also responsible for educating the pupils about Drugs (KS2 & 3), Relationships and Health Education (KS2) and Relationships, Health and Sex Education (KS3).

Effective relationships and sex education is essential if young people are to make responsible, informed and healthy decisions about their lives, both now and in the future.

Drug, alcohol and tobacco education is an explicit, planned component of PSHE. It enables pupils to increase their knowledge and understanding of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and to explore attitudes and develop skills for making healthy, informed choices.

Lessons within year groups may be enhanced using outside speakers and educational visits.
